What are avatars in Smartico, and why use them?

An avatar is the picture that shows a player in the gamification widget, on leaderboards and in tournaments. It gives players an identity they care about. It is also a reward: you can give avatars from missions, tournaments, mini-games, badges, raffles, the store, campaigns and automation rules, so a rare avatar becomes a goal in itself.

How do players get an avatar?

You decide for each avatar. Free avatars are open to everyone at once. Reward avatars must be won or bought, for example in a tournament or in the store. You can set a default avatar for all players; if you don't, each new player gets a random free one. Reward avatars can show as locked, as something to chase, or stay hidden until the player gets them.

Is AI customization included?

Avatars come with Smartico gamification at no extra cost. AI customization is a paid add-on. With it, players apply the changes you define, such as a red hat or green glasses, and the AI makes a new version of their avatar. Players pay for each change with points, gems or diamonds.

How does an AI change work for the player?

The player opens their avatar, picks a change, for example Royal Crown for 5 gems, and confirms the price. In a few seconds the AI draws a new version of the avatar with the change. Every picture is saved to the player's history, so they can go back to an earlier look at any time. A change the player cannot afford is grayed out.

How do we control the cost of AI changes?

Each AI change has a cost, so there are two monthly limits, and you set both: one for each player and one for your whole brand. When a player reaches their limit, they are asked to try again later. When the brand reaches its limit, AI changes pause for everyone until the next month. You can translate both messages.

Can we control when and to whom avatars appear?

Yes. Each avatar can be active or inactive and has a display order. Free avatars can run only between set dates, in UTC or in each player's own time zone. You can also turn avatars on for test players first and for everyone later.

Can an avatar be the prize for an achievement, or a store item?

Yes. Make a special avatar the prize of a mission, badge, tournament, mini-game, raffle, campaign or automation rule. If you sell an avatar in the store, limit it to one purchase per player and hide it once bought, so nobody buys the same avatar twice.

Where do players see avatars?

In the gamification widget, on leaderboards and in tournaments, and in any widget you build with Vibe Studio. Avatars use the same points, gems, diamonds and segments as the rest of Smartico gamification. If you prefer a cleaner look, you can hide avatars on leaderboards.

What if we use the older avatar setup?

The older (legacy) avatars give each player a random avatar they can change, but without rewards, visibility rules or AI changes. You can keep them for real players while you set up and test the new avatars with test players, then switch everyone over. If no avatars are turned on, players see the picture of their current level instead.

How does the demo on this page work?

It runs on Smartico's demo account with the same SDK calls your site would use. Opening this page gives you 50 demo points a day. Each change calls Smartico's avatar AI, takes the points and saves the new picture to your history. The demo points have no value, and the demo has its own monthly limit.
