UK Deposit Limits Are Now Live: Five Places They Touch Your CRM
.png)
Since September 30, UK-licensed operators have had to offer gross deposit limits and call them by that name. The Gambling Commission pushed the date back from June 30 after operators asked for more time, so many teams have only had a few weeks with the rules in production.
Most coverage has been about the player-facing side: the limit screens, the labels, the cooling-off period. A deposit limit also changes what your CRM should send, to whom, and when. This article walks through the places where the two meet, then ends with an audit you can run this week.
What changed on September 30
The Commission's technical standards now say the following:
- A gross deposit limit caps what a customer pays into their account over a set period. Operators must offer one, and it is the only kind of limit that can be called a "deposit limit."
- Gross deposit limits run over fixed time frames. Other limit types can use fixed or rolling ones.
- When several limit types are on offer, the gross deposit limit needs at least equal prominence.
- If a customer sets more than one limit, the most restrictive one applies. Once it is reached, deposits are blocked until the period restarts or the customer raises the limit, and a 24-hour cooling-off period applies to increases.
- In the implementation guidance, "spend limits" are renamed "stake limits," and "net deposit limit" (deposits minus withdrawals) is a new defined term.
This sits on top of the first phase, which took effect on October 31, 2025. iGaming Business reported that it includes a prompt for new customers to set a financial limit before their first deposit. Check the final text of the standards with your compliance team before you change anything. What follows is our reading of how the rules affect CRM work, and the rules themselves do not say how marketing should behave.
1. The welcome journey now has a limit prompt in it
The limit prompt arrives at the moment your welcome journey wants a first deposit. If a push notification or SMS saying "make your first deposit" lands within minutes of registration, it competes with the screen that asks the player to set a limit.
Look at the timing of your first messages after registration. Many teams will find it works better to let the limit prompt and the first deposit happen in the app, and to start the welcome sequence a little later. If you want evidence for your own player base, compare first-deposit conversion for cohorts before and after the change, and keep a control group so you can tell the effect of the rule from the effect of a message. Our guide to the onboarding window between first and second deposit covers the timing questions in more depth.
2. Players at their limit should leave deposit-driven campaigns
Once a player reaches the limit, deposits are blocked. A reload bonus, a "deposit now" popup or a push that says "claim your match" sent to that player is noise at best. At worst it reads as pressure.
If your platform sends limit events to the CRM, build a segment for players who are at or near their limit and exclude it from every campaign that asks for a deposit. In Smartico, a campaign can use any event defined in the system as its entry trigger, and segments can combine those events with player attributes, so this is a configuration task. If your platform does not send limit data yet, ask your platform team for it. Without it, the CRM has to guess.
3. Message wording has to match the new terms
Only a gross limit may be called a "deposit limit." A message that tells a player about a "deposit limit" when the product is a loss limit or a stake limit is now a labeling problem. The same goes for the help-center article your emails link to.
Search your templates for the word "limit" in every channel and every language you send in. Email, SMS, popups and inbox messages all count. Translated versions are where old wording tends to survive.
4. Deposit-based bonus ladders meet fixed limits
A "deposit X, get Y" ladder assumes the player can deposit X. A player with a low daily or weekly limit may never reach the higher steps. Review how your ladders look against the limits your players set, and consider offers that do not depend on deposit size, such as missions, loyalty points or tournament entries. Our pieces on smarter bonusing and promotional fatigue go through how to shift budget toward behavior rather than deposit amount.
5. Limit resets are a timing trap
Fixed time frames mean limits reset at predictable moments. That creates a temptation to send "your limit has just reset" reminders. In our view, that message is the kind a regulator could read as encouraging deposits, and we would not send it. Agree with your compliance team what the CRM may and may not say around a reset.
Frequency caps and do-not-disturb windows help here. In Smartico, caps work at the individual and global level and can be tied to campaign categories, and do-not-disturb periods control when messages go out. They give you a safety net in case a campaign is configured too aggressively.
What to measure
Pick a few numbers and watch them for a month:
- The share of new players who set a limit at registration
- First-deposit conversion by registration cohort, before and after each phase
- How often players reach their limit
- Unsubscribe, complaint and support-ticket rates on messages sent near a limit
None of these will tell you whether the rule is "good" or "bad" for revenue. They will tell you where your journeys need adjusting, which is the useful part.
A 30-minute audit
- List every campaign that triggers on "deposit approved" or asks for a deposit.
- Check that each one excludes players at their limit, or note that it cannot yet.
- Search all templates and locales for the word "limit" and confirm the term matches the product.
- Review the timing of the first welcome message against the limit prompt.
- Ask compliance what the CRM may say when a limit resets, and write the answer down.
